question, how hard is it to rip levels?

Yep. The 3D and 2D characters are all the same format in-game, the 2D characters simply use planes that all face the same way, but they are still layered in 3D space. The only difference with the 3D characters is their planes face many directions in 3D space. It's still all geometry that moves using the same rig and animation style.

So these guys are all models despite being solely composed of flat sprites?

@Peardian: How did you Ripped the models

@MrGameAndSketch: See my earlier comments, and yes, my process should work on SPM.

will the model ripping tool ever be made public? also, would it work with super paper mario?

it... still is a sequel. the OG partners were likely planned to be NPCs at most, in the end Parakarry and Bow were the only ones they used.

"why are the old partners here?" this was originally a sequel to the n64 paper Mario but they apparently said "no nevermind"

most likely everyone knows, i just like sharing fun facts

@Jack The Hack no? That isn't what that video is about at all? Skawo found the models and animations for the old partners in the game's files and added them as NPC's with his own custom dialogue for each one. All the PM64 partners minus Bow are unused in the final game.

The ones labeled "_tri" are triangulated. The game's models are naturally n-gons, which not all programs support, so I included triangulated versions.

What's the difference between the files with and without _tri btw? I know on import into Blender the textures don't show up so i have to manually plug them in

@BillepBillep Technically they still are sprites, they're just split into separate pieces that are animated separately.

Wondering if you have the tool you used available for others to try out. Maybe someone from the TTYD community can try to refine it.

i hope the ttyd sprites in spriters don't move
that would be really sad

I can't rip stages yet, sadly. They seem to use a different format than characters.

wait... THE REST OF THE PARTNERS FROM PAPER MARIO 1 WERE IN THIS GAME TOO?!

question, can stages be ripped?

I've been waiting on someone to do this for FOREVERRRR. Thank you so much! :)

I mean, even Color Splash and Origami King's sprites are technically models. To exist in 3D space i'm pretty sure they have to be, even if they're visually just sprites.

Never realized these were actually models rather than collections of sprites (something like the Hookbill sprites in Yoshi's Island). By RII, you mean Retriever II?

SPM uses the exact same model format so it should.

Maybe. I haven't tried yet.

@Peardian, does it work with Super Paper Mario models?
Avatar
Aug 29, 2020, 10:15 PM
I wrote a custom script which piggybacks on RII's old model viewer, using the source code to organize the debug data into a structure I can import. The process is very complex and involves a lot of manual effort. I really hope that someone creates a better, fully-automated tool sometime soon.
