Secret Stone? Demon King? That's right, there's no wondering what the highlights of this update are... it's The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder! User Qw2 did a fantastic job at ripping hundreds of models from the latest Zelda game, and Centrixe the Dodo gave us a nice head-start on the brand new Mario title to hold everyone over for a while. That's not the only thing we've got here, of course! Other highlights include Plants vs. Zombies and Fallout 4, plus lots more. Be sure to check out yet another large batch of custom models, as well!

We're continuing to do our best to go through submissions as fast as we can without compromising quality. The fact that we were able to include so many Tears of the Kingdom models in today's update is because of the help and cooperation of submitters like Qw2, providing proper icons and ironing out all of the issues ahead of time. Remember, it will take a while for your submissions to be reviewed, so make the most of the time! Learn to render good icons if you haven't already, run models through the Model Checker Tool, and make sure you double-check your own exports. The last thing we want to do is reject a five-month-old submission because of a silly-but-unfixable mistake.

Anyway, enjoy!

(It’s under The Legend of Zelda, Tears of the Kingdom, not just Tears of the Kingdom.)

@MobMaster: "The" (as well as "a") is such a common prefix for game names that it's excluded from alphabetization, otherwise there'd be hundreds of games grouped together just under "The" on the sites.

I guess that makes sense… you don’t want anyone accusing you of profiting off of work you don’t own, even indirectly. My thoughts were that even if you couldn’t charge money for the models, you could accept donations for the work you do to run the site. But I do understand that this site doesn’t want to cross a line that might endanger everything. Thanks for responding and explaining. Also, I do know that you guys all put a crazy amount of work into this site already. I appreciate that, which is why it seems reasonable (apart from the legal stuff) for them to receive at least some monetary reward. But I also know that it would be impossible to simply pay them to work here, so please don’t think I’m blaming you for that. Everyone involved is handling stuff in a great way. I just wanted to give my idea. Thanks!

The fact that we don't own the content we host is the number one reason we don't accept direct funding. It would effectively be selling IP we don't own, even if it's available without payment. Beyond that though, I think you underestimate just how much the site would have to make in order to be able to pay the entire staff a reasonable amount but to make it simple, let's look at an unreasonable (small) amount first. We currently have 10 staff members, not counting me or Dazz. If we were to offer each of them $100/month, which is nothing compared to the work they do, we'd be looking at $12,000/year. Our staff, and the staff of many sites like this one, don't do what they do because they have to but because it's something they love. Would they like to be able to make money in the process? Of course! And we would love to be able to provide it but it's just not financially feasible which is why we rely on members to submit content and staff to volunteer their time to keep the site running. That's also why approval times can be so long - the staff have their own lives to attend to and they work on the site if and when they can and only when they can - their real lives always come first.

That might be true, I guess they may not want to receive any money to avoid unwanted attention.

I mean... this website hosts materials mostly taken from other media, so it's not really the sort of site that can take donations.

So, there are currently 109,002 users. That’s a lot! There are also 63,413 models on the site. That’s a huge amount. The small staff here somehow have the incredible dedication and patience to support this massive project in their spare time, while receiving little or no payment for it. I think that’s pretty crazy, but I’m assuming there’s no way for the staff to be well paid, because the only income the site could possibly be getting is coming from ads. Honestly, that’s not normal. Websites like this would typically never have a staff member check every submission with no payment. Normally Peardian would be getting paid to help with a website like this, but the website is totally free and doesn’t make money.

I know that everyone here really appreciates that. It’s great to have such a huge resource for free. However, I have a suggestion. The models resource has become so big that it’s hard for me to believe that it can survive without funding for too much longer. It’s just not a fair ask. As far as I know, the Models Resource doesn’t have a patron or anything. If it does, it’s not well advertised. If you go to allsides.com, for example, they always have a banner at the top of their page asking for supporting memberships, which requires a subscription to remove ads. But that’s not why people do it. They get the membership to support the mission of the website.

I don’t know if this would work for this website. Maybe gamers don’t spend their money on supporting others. But I’d be surprised if nobody supported Models Resource. Everyone who makes good free content these days has a patron, it’s how they succeed. I’m amazed at how well the models resource has done without significant payment, but the site keeps growing and the workload will keep growing too. It’s only right that as the site succeeds, the staff should enjoy increased financial success. I know why they can’t be paid right now, because the site is free. But I don’t think it would be an issue to politely suggest that those who feel so inclined are able to donate money, once or on a monthly basis.

I don’t know, maybe the staff has already thought of this and rejected it. I just thought I’d suggest it in case it is considered a good idea. After all, if generous people gave money to have the staff be paid, the experience would probably be better for the staff and better for the users. Like I said, I’m getting the idea from websites like allsides.com, which has a bunch of paid staff because people donate to keep the website alive. I feel like the models resource would have nothing to lose by making the option available (And constantly reminding users that it’s there). That’s what I typically expect from free sites, and it doesn’t offend me at all. That’s how websites stay as healthy as possible.

If this was a bad, ignorant, or obnoxious thing to say, I’m sorry. I’m just trying to help and I hope my idea is good. *shrug*
